I love the look of a chic planter perched on a tall wooden plant stand. Not only does it add height to your plant displays (thusly creating more room) but they can help your little plants reach any hard to reach sunrays. Unfortunately, these wooden plant stands can be pretty expensive to come by, but that doesn’t mean you have to go without! Keep reading for my easy DIY wooden plant stand tutorial. You can complete this DIY wooden plant stand in less than a few hours!
DIY Wooden Plant Stand: Items You’ll Need
-Hag saw
-drill
-keg
-1/4 inch wooden dowels
-wood stain (I used Dark Walnut, but you can use whatever you would like)
-wood glue
-1×2 inch piece of pine wood (I got a 6 ft long piece for this project)
– 3/4 x 3/4 square hardwood
Step One
Cut your four legs out of the square hardwood. On average, it’s a good idea to cut your legs so that they are the same height as the pot it will support. When complete, you’ll want to cut the platform in which the pot will rest on. The width of the platform should be the same width as the widest part of your pot. Cut one 1×2 wooden piece to match the width of the pot. Cut the next 1×2 piece (the second part of your X) the same length minus the length of your 1×2. Next, cut the 1×2 piece in half. These pieces will form the frame of your pot stand.
Step Two
Now, you’ll want to drill the holes to connect all of the pieces together. To start, you’ll want to drill two holes in the center of the long piece, all the way through. The wood is thin, so make sure that you do so with care. Hold the smaller X pieces on to the holes and mark the area with a pencil. Drill holes into each of these shorter X pieces that are deep enough for you to insert a dowel halfway in. Fit the platform together using the dowels but do not glue yet.
Step Three
Next, you will want to attach the legs to the X. Then it’s time to drill the pocket holes. Drill a pocket hole into the bottom side of each of the four points on the platform. Attach each leg to the pocket hole you just drilled.
Step Four
Now it’s the fun part! Time to assemble. Use glue on your wooden dowels and put them back into place, clamping it together and allowing it to fully dry overnight.
Step Five
Once your plant stand has fully dried, give it a good once over with the paintbrush. After that has dried, put your plant inside of it and enjoy! You can make these in any size that you would like! Find other houseplant DIY ideas here.
