Here’s what you’ll need:

45-50 meters of 3mm thick cotton string

Scissors

A tape measure

Washi tape

Basic knowledge of knots (you’ll need to learn how to do a Larks Head knot, a Vertical Larks knot, a Square knot, and a Spiral stitch

A door knob to hold your string while you work

Step One

Use your measuring tape to cut your chords to the following lengths: 8×4.5m chords, 1x1m, and 1x2m. Next, set the 8 chords together and fold it in half so you have a loop at the top. This is where the planter will hang. Tape about 7m down from the loop with a length of Washi tape. Now, take the 2m cord and tie it around the loop with a larks head knot. Finally, repeat the process around the loop many times so that the loop is completely covered in larks head knots, using one sting each for the right and left sides.

Step Two

Then, remove the washi tape and secure the knot with the 1m string tied in a “Gathering knot.” After that is done, you can begin with the actual macrame. Separate the 16 strings into 4 groups of 4 and begin working. Next, use one of the groups to tie a 25cm long spiral stitch section. Repeat three more times with the other string groups.

Step Three

Now, finish each group off with a square knot, repeating the process so that each side is tied off. Next, take two strings from one group, and two strings from the adjacent group and tie them together with two square knots. This should create a patterned diamond shape. Repeat so that all of the strings are tied together.

Now, you’re done tying the knots. Gather all of the strings together and tie off with the large knot of your choosing. You can elect to jut the extra strings, or leave them hanging. I like to leave them hanging.
