The holidays will be here before we know it and I’m already plotting as far as decorating goes! I’m really into “Zero waste” things so I like to use repurpose things found indoors and out when it comes to holiday decor. One of my yearly traditions is to make a DIY holiday wreath out of plant cuttings. It’s a ton of fun because you can use plant cuttings from indoors or out, and you can really deck out your front door wreath. And the best part is that it just biodegrades (minus the wreath form and wiring, I save those each year!) into the ground at the end of the season.
Here’s how I make my own DIY holiday wreath made out of plant cuttings.
DIY Holiday Wreath: Materials Needed
To create a holiday wreath using plant cuttings from indoors or out, you’ll need the following tools and materials:
- 12 inch metal wreath form (usually can be found at any craft store, though I usually get mine from Target)
- Greenery cut into 6 inch -12 inch lengths. (I like to use a mixture of pine needles cut from my tree outside, live eucalyptus from my indoor plants, and even some polka dot begonia cuttings if I am displaying the finished product indoors). Remember, the more the merrier!
- Green coated floral wire used to secure your greenery to the leaf form.
- Pliers for cutting the floral wire if you haven’t saved your previous year’s like me 😉
- Pine cones, ribbons, twine, or any other baubles that you want to use to decorate your wreath. These are totally optional, though I usually use twine.
DIY Holiday Wreath: Step One
Take a mixture of greenery pieces and bunch them together at the base of each plant. Use the floral wire to secure this end of the plant to your wire wreath form. Wrap the wire around your plant end a few times, but do NOT trim it yet–we want to continue wrapping so that there is one wire holding the wreath together as this is how you can keep things more secure.
Repeat this step so that the entire portion of the wreath form is covered in greenery bundles. Take care to layer each bundle over the last so that the green floral wiring is totally hidden.
DIY Holiday Wreath: Step Two
As soon as you have made it around the entirety of your wreath form securing bundles, you can tuck the last corner bundle into the first one and clip the wiring. Now that the entire form is full of greenery, take care to fluff it up a bit and fill in any holes with additional eucalyptus, begonia leaves, or even poinsettia or Christmas cactus flowers if you have a live house plant that is producing in your home.
If you want to add some baubles to your DIY holiday wreath, now is the time to do so! Use additional floral wire to secure in any pinecones, burlap, ribbon, etc.
DIY Holiday Wreath: Step Three
Now that your holiday wreath is done, you just need to care for it! If you used only outdoor plants in your wreath, you can display your wreath on the front door without having to do much other than mist it every few days.
If you used polka dot begonia, eucalyptus, or other house plant cuttings, you’ll want to keep it indoors where it’s warmer and spray the leaves at least once a day to prevent curling.
