DIY Live Poinsettia Centerpiece For The Holidays

Don't throw your poinsettia away after Christmas, these poinsettia care after Christmas tips will help you get your plant to rebloom in no time.

As I mentioned in my last post about making holiday wreaths, using pre-existing materials to create holiday decor is one of my favorite things to do. I’ve had a poinsettia tree for a few years now (check out how big it is below!) and I love to use live cuttings to create a gorgeous live poinsettia centerpiece.

Perfect for tables or mantelpieces, this DIY live poinsettia centerpiece lasts for weeks and is the perfect thing for holiday decorating. Keep reading below to see how I make my own.

How to make a DIY live poinsettia centerpiece

Here’s what you need:

– Mason jars or an empty centerpiece of some sort. I used this one from Amazon

-Water

-Live poinsettia cuttings

-Pinecones on sticks (these can be found at your local craft store)

-Red roses or other red flowers

Step one: First, head out to your poinsettia bush and cut some live poinsettia. You’ll want to keep the stems relatively long, so make sure that you leave enough room on the stems when taking your cuttings.

Step Two: Next, fill your vase or centerpiece with water and add 3 teaspoons of bleach and 1 teaspoon of sugar. This will keep your poinsettia cuttings looking great for at least two weeks. **While this is a good tip, I recommend making your live poinsettia centerpieces on the day of a large event.

Step Three: Place your poinsettia cuttings into the water mixture and fill the spaces with pinecones, eucalyptus, roses, or other holiday flowers like lilies. The more you mix into your centerpiece the better!

Step Four: Now, all that’s left is to enjoy your gorgeous centerpiece that you created from your favorite house plant cuttings. And if you aren’t into the poinsettia look this Christmas, you can always try to mix up your centerpiece with pine needles, eucalyptus, or other dark green plants.
