And if you’re feeling inspired to get growing as soon as possible after reading those seed starting tips, I don’t blame you at all! Now is the perfect time to begin starting seeds. To being seed starting, you’ll need a soil mix. Here’s my favorite DIY seed starting mix to make yourself at home.

DIY Seed Starter Mix Recipe

In order to make your own DIY seed starter mix, you’ll need to pick up the following items from Amazon or a local nursery. If you aren’t a composter, stop by a local garden–often times they will let you purchase your own.

  • Coco Coir
  • Perlite
  • Worm Casings (not wettened)
  • Organic Compost

After you’ve acquired your ingredients, it’s time to get mixing so that the gardening can begin. Combine 4 parts coco coir, 2 parts organic compost, 1 part perlite, and a handful of worm casings together in a large bucket or container. Mix well with a small shovel until all aspects of your DIY seed starting mix are thoroughly combined.

Wet the mixture so that it is slightly damp and easily compostible, and start planting your seedlings just as soon as you’re ready to begin your growing season. With all of the nutrients found in this mixture, your seeds are sure to thrive and produce a wonderful yield for you and your family all year long. Use this mixture on perennials or vegetables—it benefits both just as well.
