If you’ve never thought about growing an olive tree indoors, you definitely should. This house plant is about to be the hottest home décor accessory of 2020, and I honestly expect olive trees to surpass fiddle leaf figs as far as popularity is concerned. If you want to grow one in your own home, check out these tips and tricks that will help you learn how to grow an olive tree indoors in no time at all.

Olive tree potted care

Naturally, indoor plants are usually potted. And potted Olive trees have to be cared for a little differently than they would if they were planted in ground.

Make sure it receives sun

Of course, this is one of those houseplants that LOVES sun. Make sure that your Olive tree is in a location that receives at least 6 hours of sunlight per day. This is crucial when learning how to grow an olive tree indoors.

Well-drained soil is key

As with all potted plants, root rot is a definite killer. Make sure you plant your olive trees in a well-draining soil variety. I like to use a cactus mix for my own olive tree. Allow the soil to dry out in between waterings, but if your leaves begin to get crunchy or crisp, definitely up the frequency. Olive trees usually grow in dry environments so misting isn’t required!

Don’t place the tree in a pot that is too big, as it should only be a few inches wider than the size of the root ball. You will probably have to repot your plant at least once a year, preferably during the growing season.

Olive tree fruiting cycle

In order to actually produce fruit, olive trees need to be placed outside for a few months during the year. Keep it out of any harsh sunlight and well-watered and this should be easy to achieve. Typically, it takes a 3-5 years of growth for the tree to be strong enough to bear fruit. Learn more about the fruiting cycle here.

Also keep in mind that this tree can’t be grown inside for forever. After eight years, move it to a more permanent outdoor position in order for continued growth. Either way, this is one of the prettiest trees I’ve ever seen and an olive tree is always going to be a staple in my home!
