I do a lot of cooking, and recently, I have been really into growing an indoor herb garden. It’s so nice to be able to reach over the kitchen sink and cut my own parsley, mint, and other herbs to be used in my dishes. You can really taste the fresh herbs when you do it in this way. Learn how to start your own indoor herb garden with these tips, tricks, and indoor gardening tips!
Pick the right plants for your indoor herb garden
When growing plants indoors, it’s important that you grow plants that will do well indoors. Honestly, some plants just are not cut out for it. To begin your indoor herb garden, consider growing things like Basil, Chives, Mint, Parsley, Rosemary, and Thyme. All of these herbs do wonderfully when grown indoors because they do well in containers.
Pick the right containers
Speaking of containers, the right kind of container will be crucial to the health of your plant. Always pick indoor gardening containers that have plenty of drainage. This will allow you to prevent the onset of root rot (though if you do come down with it, this tutorial should help!) and water your plants at an even deeper level.
You’ll need plenty of sun
Pick the sunniest window you have to grow your herb garden indoors. Herbs will need (at minimum) five hours of sunlight per day. I have a southern facing window in my kitchen that my herbs absolutely love! But don’t get discouraged if you don’t have a sunny window in your kitchen. Your garden will thrive anywhere, you might just have to go on a short walk to get there!
Trim with clean scissors
When harvesting your herbs, make sure that you cut the herbs from their stems with clean scissors. Additionally, make sure that you are only taking a few sprigs of herbs at a time…this will help the herb continue to produce herbs at a more efficient rate.
Don’t overwater
Overwatering, more often than not, is the killer of most houseplants. It occurs when plants are overwatered, and constantly sitting in soggy soil. Soggy soil produces bacteria that cause your plant to rot off and die. To prevent this, water your plants ONLY when the top few inches of soil have dried out. And water deeply (so that water drains out the bottom of your pot) every time. Learn more watering tips here.
