Itching to start gardening? I’m right there with you! Have you ever thought about learning how to grow vegetables from scraps?
Fortunately, the windows of this place rocks. Not only can I grow houseplants indoors, but I can grow vegetables from scraps, too. Keep reading to learn how to grow vegetables from scraps indoors. It’s really quite easy…
Pick Your Scraps For Indoor Vegetable Gardening
You can actually regrow a lot of stuff in your kitchen from scraps. Things like lettuce, celery, green onions, potatoes, ginger, and pineapple all work quite well. To grow them from scraps, simply put the live end (the end with the roots, or the top of the pineapple) into a few inches of water. You’ll only want the end to be in the water, nothing else. Change out the water every couple of days and you should begin to see roots forming. When the roots are 4-5 inches long, you can move on to the step below.
Plant In Soil
As soon as the roots have developed, you can move your veggie scraps into soil. Keep soil moist (but not sopping) as the roots take. Make sure you place your veggie scraps in an area that gets plenty of indirect sunlight and somewhere that isn’t too cold.
All of my veggie scraps are planted in a vegetable mix for containers and are in a southern facing window with a sheer curtain in front of it. I water about once week usually.
Long Term Care Hacks
Unfortunately, you can’t keep vegetables alive for too long from scraps. Though things like green onions, lettuce, and garlic will continue to grow, they will have to be trimmed recently. If you notice that they are suddenly super unproductive, I recommend tossing them out and starting over. Pineapples, on the other hand, can grow for years. My friend has one that is 5 years old!
See how easy it is to grow vegetables from scraps? All you have to do is propagate them in water until roots form and then transfer them over. As soon as they are in the ground, it’s really not much different than caring for another kind of plant.
This hack is saving me right now because I am not to keen on popping into the grocery store every few days for produce. We can just grow what is needed at home, instead, even though it isn’t permanent. I hope to start some lettuce seeds indoors here soon, and I will walk you through it when I do!
