I have an extensive indoor cactus collection and it’s easily my favorite part of my houseplant collection. There are so many weird cactuses out there and they add such incredible texture to any interior space. However, though they’re gorgeous, caring for cactus indoors can be tricky. Believe it or not, it can be hard for some people to supplement the growing conditions that the cactus craves in an indoor environment. Keep reading to learn everything you need to know about caring for cactus indoors.
Caring For Cactus (Indoors)
Of course, when caring for cactus indoors, the right location is everything. Cactus plants need to grow in an area of full sun. Like the fullest, brightest window you have. They like direct sun, and tons of heat, so don’t be afraid to place them on a windowsill.
After you have picked a location, plant your succulent in a pot full of well-draining cactus potting soil. Do not pot the cactus in regular potting soil. Regular potting soil is too dense and can harm the roots of your plants. Cactus plants love well-drying soil. Additionally, cactus plants do well in terra cotta pots.
Because cactus plants store water in their leaves, like succulents, they are extremely prone to root rot. Only water your cactus plant when the soil feels completely dry. Do not water when soil feels moist. This could cause root rot. I only water my cactus about every three weeks in the growing season. And only once a month in the winter. Additionally, cactus plants are sensitive to light and grow toward the direction of the sun. Rotate your pot once monthly so that your cactus grows straight and upright.
Troubleshooting Tips
If your cactus is turning white, it might be receiving too much sunlight. Move it to a darker location. Spider mites are also a common problem, but misting the plant regularly with water can help solve the problem.
