DIY zero waste plant fertilizer

I’ve gotten into the whole zero waste thing recently (and even went totally plastic free in my bathroom!) and wanted to extend it to my plant care. Most house plant fertilizers come in plastic containers and it’s been my mission to eliminate as many of those as possible.

So instead of buying more fertilizer in a plastic container, I found a pretty great way to make my own. The best part is that it uses everything you probably have hanging around your house.

It's a good idea to use less plastic & an easy way to do so is to swap your store bought fertilizer for this zero waste plant fertilizer.

Heres’s what you’ll need to make your own zero waste plant fertilizer.

-A mason jar or another container. You could even refill a plastic fertilizer jug to extend it’s life!

-A pitcher of water

-banana peels

It's a good idea to use less plastic & an easy way to do so is to swap your store bought fertilizer for this zero waste plant fertilizer.

To make, place a pitcher of water in your refrigerator and put the banana peels inside it to soak after you’re done eating them. Let soak for 3-4 days and then strain the liquid into your mason jar or other container. When in use, add 5 parts water to 1 part banana tea and apply it directly to plant roots. This is a great all-natural potassium source and most plants will love it! However, there is no nitrogen in this mixture, so to sub for that keep reading below!

To supplement your house plants with nitrogen, add a teaspoon of bone meal to the banana mixture when you go to apply it on your plants.

Wasn’t that easy? Now you’ll never have to rely on store-bought fertilizer again and you can keep more plastic out of out landfills and oceans.
