Also known as a “baby rubber plant” this gorgeous beauty is one of the biggest “little plants” on the market today. The Peperomia Obtusifolia plant is the best plant for desktops, dressers, or any other kind of small space. A relatively slow grower, this plant won’t grow a ton each year, but it will delight you with it’s gorgeous patterned leaves, and a succulent-like shine. Keep reading to learn everything that you need to know about Peperomia Obtusifolia care.
Peperomia Obtusifolia Care
Believe it or not, Peperomia Obtusifolia plants have been sold as houseplants since the mid 1930s (for real) and the Peperomia genus is home to thousands of sub plants, all of which are equally as gorgeous. Here’s how to care for a Peperomia Obtusifolia.
Sunlight: Peperomia Obtusifolia does not like bright direct sun of any kind. Keep it in an area where it will receive bright, indirect light all day long, but never direct sunlight. As I mentioned earlier, mine sits on my desk, about 7 feet away from a West-facing window.
Watering: Allow potting soil to completely dry out between waterings. Typically, this means you’ll need to water every 10 days or as soon as leaves begin going limp.
Fertilizer: Fertilize twice a year, once before the growing season begins and once just as it ends.
Temperature: Peperomia plants like to be kept between 65-70 degrees.
Common Problems: Browning or crispy leaf edges is often a symptom caused by drafts–move the plant out of the draft to cause the problem. Dull, limp leaves that are no longer shiny is often caused by too much sunlight. Move the plant away from the window and the glossy leaves should return in no time at all.
Peperomia Obtusifolia Flowering
If you’re wondering whether or not this plant will produce blooms, the answer is YES, but they aren’t super showy. The flowers look similar to cat lillies, and can reach several inches in length.
