Top Houseplant Trends in 2024

Are you an indoor gardener? You might want to take stock of these predicted houseplant trends in 2024 so that you can get ahead of the curve.

Houseplant trends are one of my favorite thing to write about each year. It’s so fun to watch the plant community go wild over a certain species, and it’s even more fun if you already have one of those plants of your own. If you like to stay ahead of the houseplant trends, check out this article to learn about my predicted top houseplant trends in 2024.

Thai Constellation Monstera

I know, I know. This plant has been around for a minute. However, thanks to the plant becoming more widely available, Thai Constellations are more affordable now than in years past. And if there’s any time to jump on the Thai Constellation train, it’s right now! This plant grows just as big as a traditional split-leaf Monstera, but instead of a nromal green pattern, this one has an elaborate white variegation.

It is important to note that while gorgeous, it’s never ideal if your Thai Constellation leaves are fully white. When they go fully white, the plant is unable to process Chlorophyll and the leaf (and plant itself) will eventually die off. I find it best just to remove the all-white leaves just to be safe!

Like regular monsteras, the Thai Constellation loves plenty of sunlight and almost always benefits from the addition of a moss pole. You can let this plant dry out slightly in between waterings.

Monstera Esqueleto

This plant is definitely difficult to acquire, but that doesn’t mean it’s impossible! The Monstera Esqueleto is a distant cousin of the Monstera Adasonii and actually has a similar leaf shape and fenestration pattern. However, the Monstera Esqueleto differs from the Adasonii in the fact that the holes are MUCH larger, and the leaves can get up to three FEET long. Like the Adasonii (and the Thai Constellation on this list) the Esqueleto is also a climber and benefits from a moss pole. Those with an Esqueleto report issues with plant yellowing, and this is often caused by too much direct sunlight. Move to an area of indirect sun.

Variegated Philodendron

Are you noticing a theme? Variegated plants are one of the biggest houseplant trends in 2024. Variegated Philodendrons such as the Ring of Fire, White Wizard, Pink Princess, and White Knight are blessing nursery shelves—I’ve even seen them at Walmart—and it’s time to get one ASAP.

Of the tree varieties, I have found the White Knight to be most hardy. I can let it dry out for extended periods and it almost bounces back. White Wizard, on the other hand, likes to stay consistently moist, and puts out absolutely stunning leaves. All variegated Philos love tons of sunlight. However, it’s important to note that unlike the Monstera, most of these plants will not fenesterate, or grow with split leaves.

Olive Trees

Perfect for rustic homes and those who love the a simplistic vibe—the Olive Tree is perfect, and is going to be EVERYWHERE in interior design this year. Shockingly easy to care for, these plants have clean lines and can put up with the driest, harshest of conditions. They can grow to be up to six feet tall, and will produce olives (that you can press for oil!) if conditions are optimal.

African Violets

Dramatic, visibly textured, and oh-so-gorgeous, the African Violet is making a vibrant comeback in 2024. These plants have lush, velvety leaves with colorful blooms that last for months and rebloom over and over (if cared for correctly). One of the biggest things to keep in mind when growing African Violets, is that it reacts extremely poor to standing water and leaf misting of ANY sort. Should you mist a leaf, immediately dry if off. If you leave it, the plant will immediately shed the leaf. And though it may be temperamental, this beauty is going to be the biggest thing on Instagram in 2024.
